CHARACTER INFORMATION NAME: Lovino Vargas (Romano / South Italy)
CANON: Axis Powers Hetalia
CANON REFERENCE: Link~AGE: 16
GENDER: Male
YEAR IN SCHOOL/FACULTY POSITION: HS3
APPEARANCE: Lovino has copper-brown hair , olive skin and eyes that are currently halfway through the process of turning from green to amber, leaving them in the hazely range. He keeps himself very tidy, to the point where one wouldn't be surprised to learn that the slightly messy look of his hair was carefully planned every morning to make him look as good as possible. However, there is an odd curl that sticks up from his hair and seems to obey neither comb nor gravity; this is a piece of hair he is very protective of, for it has strangely grown much more sensitive than the rest of his hair. Interestingly, anything that touches or yanks on this curl seems to go straight to his groin, and he's usually not all that impressed when that happens.
Lovino takes great care choosing his outfits, and will rarely (if ever) wear anything like T-shirts or shorts. He is most commonly seen in slacks, button-up shirts and fashionable ties. He has a very good eye for fashion, at least; he knows just what will really bring out his eyes, just how to make his clothes fit him perfectly, and exactly which colors go with which. Unfortunately for others, this is information he will never share with anyone else. He wouldn't risk just anyone looking as amazing as he does.
Contrary to the image painted in the above paragraph, Lovi isn't dainty or anything. He's often found with his pants rolled up and his hands covered in dirt, barefoot, and with a few cuts and bruises to go with it. This is a boy who often gets in trouble, so his pretty and fancy clothes rarely stay pretty and fancy for long. His secret is that his clothes are rarely as expensive as they look. May have something to do with how stingy he is.
PERSONALITY: Lovino's personality splits mainly into four parts: Around women, around men, around his brother, and by himself.
Lovino, at his current age, is a very nervous man around women. While he is attracted to them and tries his best to flirt, he is normally brushed off as rude or lacking in self-confidence. He is polite to the best of his ability, and very friendly, but his voice is rough and his language is rough, and he can't really do much about it. He is a chivalrous boy, and knows not to speak harshly to a woman, but he is very straight-forward still and will spit out things that are much better kept in his head. "You look amazing" can quickly mush together into "Damn, your boobs are huge" in the moment of truth. He's also very innocent; despite a raunchy father with raunchier friends, Lovino never quite figured out what happens after kissing, and the concepts that he's been explained about just seem awkward and weird. Ironically, though, he strives for them simply because everyone else seems to. Lovino is... very gullible when it comes to peer pressure.
Around men, though, Lovino is strict and antisocial. His words become harsher, and he frequently swears up a storm in his own special way of displaying bravado. He's prone to making stupid mistakes, insulting people who should never be insulted, and biting off a whole more than he can chew with the thought of proving himself to others in mind. However, he is mostly ineffectual, annoying at the least and getting himself hurt instead of the other at the worst. He has often tried to ruin others' style or pull of random pranks to make himself look superior, which normally just makes him look like an asshole. And when push comes to shove, he will stand only until the first punch flies before he's running for the hills. He is a complete coward, and it's plain for anyone to see that he's only overcompensating his security.
Speaking of security, this is sort of an obsession for Lovino. And the main object of that obsession is his brother, Feliciano. Due to their childhood habit of losing loved ones, Lovino took it upon himself to not get close to his brother. If they never got close, Lovino wouldn't hurt his brother by dying. The problem with this is that his brother loves him very dearly, and they both know this. And despite his plan, Lovino is very much scared of Feliciano growing apart from him. Behind his strict and aggressive front, Lovino is a caring person who keeps his brother safe by any means possible, even if it means getting himself killed.
At the end of the day, the Vargas brothers are much closer to each other than they seem to portray, and Lovino sees Feliciano as his only real friend, the only person really worth his protection. He is the only person Lovino consciously sees as close to him; while he is close to his family and just as willing to protect them, he never really admits it even to himself. Lovino is mostly concerned with trapping Feliciano out and away from the world, having his brother only listen to him and never do anything remotely dangerous. Of course, being the bright and social person that he is, Feliciano will probably never be able to live like that.
As to be expected of such a person, Lovino is a very insecure person, particularly in his head. He was the sort of child who knew the monsters can seep into any crack in his blanket, and would rather suffocate himself than go up for air at night. It's advanced now, and he fears everyone innitially, resulting in his need to puff up his feathers and seem more macho than he could ever be. He's had a disease called choreia (which results in random muscle spasms and clumsiness) since he was little, and he's never told anyone about it nor allowed doctors to tell anyone. Even his family is blissfully unaware of his disease, after all these years. Because of his past experiences he's developed an inferiority complex and abandonement issues, to the point where even in his teenage years he will beg his parents to promise they'll still be alive and at home when he gets back from school. That sort of thing. He feels horrible about himself to the point where even one compliment will make his heart soar for just a moment, until his worry eats it away and preys on the idea that the speaker might not mean it.
Lovino is also highly religion-confused. He was brought up as a straight Catholic, but early involvement in gangs and mafiosi taught him that God isn't exactly just or equal. He is also mostly homosexual; while women are great for flirting and it's "normal" for him to have a
girlfriend, he sees men as better for long-term relationships, and he sees them as more attractive. However, this only serves as yet another fear, as he could never imagine gaining approval for such thoughts. He always fears being abnormal; in fact, his religion was chosen because Italy is a primarily Catholic country. He has no real attachment to God, which distresses him, and the fact that he thinks Athiest on the most part makes him feel out of place and abnormal when there's no reason to be. The curl on his head doesn't help; it's a thing only himself and Feliciano have, and he's very protective of it. Mostly because he has a giant rape phobia, and he considers touching his hair to be COMPLETELY INNAPPROPRIATE. Going near it at all normally ends in a kick to the balls or equivalent femal region.
On the Enneagram test, Lovino scores a Type 6, Wing 5: The Defender, at Level 6. In short:
"Basic Fear: Of being without support and guidance
Basic Desire: To have security and support
Key Motivations: Want to have security, to feel supported by others, to have certitude and reassurance, to test the attitudes of others toward them, to fight against anxiety and insecurity.
Level 6: To compensate for insecurities, they become sarcastic and belligerent, blaming others for their problems, taking a tough stance toward "outsiders." Highly reactive and defensive, dividing people into friends and enemies, while looking for threats to their own security. Authoritarian while fearful of authority, highly suspicious, yet, conspiratorial, and fear-instilling to silence their own fears. "
POWERS/ABILITIES: Lovino has two powers: super speed, and super-sonic screams.
Speed: He normally runs up to 10 MPH. However, when in danger or spooked in general, he can tap into a huge pool of adrenaline, letting him run up to 70 MPH just to get away from something. Unfortunately, he has no real control over this other than which direction he runs in; he can't tap into this energy regularly, nor does he really understand that it exists.
Screams: Lovino has the power of audiokinesis; his screams can knock people out, rupture their heartbeat patterns or even kill them. He can blast out windows and possibly walls, and give others migraines. With some improvement, he could also be able to mimic sounds, voices or other such things, but right now he is only able to cause destruction.
As a clarification, neither of these can be triggered under normal conditions. He can scream normally, and run normally, and normally that's all he can do. It is only under the influence of terror that his powers are activated at all. It probably doesn't help that he's in complete denial of both.
AU HISTORY: Lovino never really knew his real parents. He was given to his grandfather at the age of three, along with his one-year-old brother, Feliciano. Although he worked harder for his grandfather's affection, Feliciano seemed to gain it all instead. It made sense; Lovino was a demanding and easily flustered child, while Feliciano was sweet, loving and quiet. Though, unfortunately, this didn't bode well for the younger Vargas brother; they grew up in the rough part of Rome, and Lovino was growing to be much better suited to the streets than Feliciano.
When Lovino was 7 and Feliciano was 5, they and their grandfather were caught in a fight against mafiosi. While their grandpa faught bravely, he was very old and was soon taken down. Mortified that his role model and hero had been killed, Lovino shut his eyes tight and began to scream for all his was worth. It was quickly joined by deeper screams - when Lovino opened his eyes, he saw that the gangsters were running as if beaten, and several crates in the alley had been cracked or broken apart. Feliciano lay next to him, knocked out by the noise. And, while the danger had passed, this only served to frighten Lovino further.
Within the hour, a young man came along through the alley. He was about 14 or 15 at the time, a handsome young man who had just started living on his own recently, and who was happy to help the little boy and his brother out of the wreckage and take them to safety. This man was named Antonio Carrieda. Due to his placement in those events, Lovino began to cling to him emotionally and physically, in his own superiority-based way. Antonio was happy to care for him, and adopted him as a younger brother. However, Feliciano was adopted instead by Antonio's friend of sorts, Roderich Edelstein.
Lovino and Antonio led a happy and simple life together, moving to Antonio's homeland of Spain to work in a tomato field and make just enough money to live comfortably. They were inseperable in those times, and Lovino quickly forgot that Feliciano even existed. All he knew was that there was someone out there he was forgetting about. But that didn't matter much; his big brother was enough for him. Antonio was also the one who taught him about Catholicism/Christianity; he gave Lovino hope that his grandfather was watching him from Heaven. That was a comforting thought. At that time Antonio also had a friend who often visited him, a Belgian girl who Lovino became infatuated with. However, with a 7-year gap between them, this was brushed off as child's play. To this day, he's not completely sure if it was.
Once Lovino entered middle school, though, things changed. After an awkward run-in with a drug dealer, he began more and more frequent run-ins with organized crime. He was a good investment for gangsters; if he was in danger, he got out without a scratch, and he was rough enough around the edges that even while nervous, he could easily perform their tasks. And best of all, he was too afraid of them to do anything against them. However, all he gained confidence in his skills, his speed began to fail him. After a while, he began coming home almost every day with bruises, and refusing to leave again. And Antonio was never told the reason, or if anything, that he'd gotten hurt in pick-up soccer games.
Out of concern, Antonio quickly moved them back to Rome. At that time, Lovino was 14. On his first day of school, while hiding from bullies, he met a 12-year-old named Feliciano. It didn't take them long to realize the truth; this was his long-lost brother. And, while the reunion was awkward and uncomfortable on several levels, they were quick to bond. Neither Antonio nor Roderich could explain it, but the two seemed to immediately match wavelengths, as if they'd never been apart. Not to the naked eye - all they seemed to do was fight, actually - but at a closer glance, they were very sharply protective of each other, and still are.
It was just recently that Antonio chose to find Xavier Institute and contact them. After Lovino ran home at his mutant speed, he was forced to explain his oddities, giving Antonio the opportunity to try another tactic and try to get him away from trouble. Lovino fought it valiantly, fearing that he would be put in a freakshow, seen as abnormal, all of the like. But Antonio's and Feliciano's reassurances were enough to pacify him, long enough to get him into the school at least. The downside of this, however, was that his protective shell of a personality quickly isolated him from them both, further than it had before. He became nigh-unreachable, emotionally speaking, at around this point.
He has been here for about a month. He is prone to skipping classes for no discernable reason, cheating on tests, or just answering questions with snark. All in all, a hell child for any teacher, and one who has little to no actual book-knowledge for the superior front he puts up. However, he stays within the bounds of things that will get him expelled; he's forever scared of disappointing his family.
SAMPLE 1ST PERSON SAMPLE:Damnit, this is stupid. I don't
have any "powers", I'm
normal. It's that tomato bastard's fault that I'm here. I'm... [
He falters.] I'm only going along with his because he asked me to. It's a favor. One year, tops, and I'm leaving this shithole for good. Maybe in Italia I won't have to be around so many
freaks. Alright? [
Although by the end of this, he's lost all force to his words.]
THIRD PERSON SAMPLE:Antonio didn't have a chance to speak another word. The door to the living room was slammed in his face, and Lovino was storming toward his room. The room that had been his for two years already, the room he'd considered a safe haven that his "friends" from the outside world could never reach. This was a place where Antonio was always nearby, and always willing to get himself hurt in Lovino's name. This was something normal, safe and familiar.
He should never have opened his mouth, he decided. He should have brushed it off like everything else, and pretended it had never happened. All that rose to his head now were horrible memories, things he was sure he'd forgotten in those last seven years. He'd just made himself look like a monster to his big brother; if Antonio knew about his speed, he'd learn about his screams before long, and maybe he'd think there were other things. Yeah, he probably did; why else would he contact a freak-show school?
Lovino inhaled sharply, realizing with a start that he was starting to cry. This was horrible, worse than the cuts and bruises he'd gotten, worse than the threats and insults that rung in his ears, worse than the look of confused fear that shined in Antonio's eyes each time he found those scars and wounds. This was the shock that Antonio knew, Antonio knew his last secret, the one thing he didn't want anyone to ever know about. And he was going to announce it to this stupid school, so they'd
encourage it. This was the last shred of normalcy in his life being torn away from him, along with any chance of Antonio or Feliciano accompanying him for the trip. He was being shipped away, because he was different. He was too fucking different, and they no longer wanted to deal with him. Yeah.. that had to be it.
